An A-29 Super Tucano crash over the Red Rio Bombing Range in New Mexico has resulted in the death of a US Air Force pilot and minor injuries to another. The incident happened on June 22 as part of a training flight for the US Air Force’s Light Attack Experiment.

The Red Rio Bombing Range is part of the White Sands Missile Range, a US Army installation and the US Department of Defense’s largest, open-air test range near Holloman Air Force Base.

The crash is currently under investigation, and no cause has been determined at this time. The US Air Force has indefinitely suspended the Light Attack Experiment project, which started in July 2017 and entered its second phase just over a month ago. According to reports the US Air Force is considering ending the project early.

The Light Aircraft Experiment aims to test aircraft for counter-insurgency, ground attack and reconnaissance missions. The Super Tucano is a joint entry into the program by Brazil’s Embraer and Sierra Nevada Corporation.

Full details on the Light Aircraft Experiment, can be read in this article.
