Swedish metrology company Hexagon is to buy the Geomagic suite of engineering software tools from 3D Us-based printer manufacturer 3D Systems for US$123 million.
Geomagic includes software tools for reverse engineering, design, and inspection / quality control that works with 3D scanners and scan data. Geomagic was launched in 2013 after 3D Systems acquired Geomagic Inc. for US$55 million.
The Geomagic suite includes products such as Design X, Control X, Freeform and Wrap, can automate the processing of 3D scan data to build digital models from physical objects, which can then be used to generate history based parametric CAD models for use in product manufacturing. It can also be used for initial free-form design, tp modify existing CAD models and to accurately measure and inspect parts for quality control purposes when finished.
Hexagon said that Geomagic’s capabilities will strengthen its existing Hexagon Manufacturing Intelligence software portfolio and combine with its range of portable metrology sensors.
Norbert Hanke, interim President and CEO of Hexagon said, “The combination of Geomagic and our existing solutions will further strengthen our market leadership in 3D metrology and reengineering, demonstrating our commitment to deliver increasingly user friendly tools capable of executing complex tasks, so our customers can bring innovative, high quality products to the market at speed and with confidence.”
Geomagic has around 100 employees and generated revenues of around US$30 million in 2023 with operating margins accretive to those of Hexagon’s Manufacturing Intelligence division. Completion of the transaction is subject to regulatory approvals and other customary conditions, which are expected to be fully completed by early in the second quarter of 2025.
